Tankless water heater installation means putting in a unit that heats water on demand instead of storing and reheating a tank of it all day. Water passes through a heat exchanger and gets heated instantly as you run the tap, which means no standby energy loss and, more importantly for most homeowners, no running out of hot water halfway through a shower when someone else starts the dishwasher.
Most people considering this are either building new, replacing a tank unit that's failed, or tired of running out of hot water in a busy household. If you've got a family sharing one bathroom schedule, a tank unit that empties fast, or you're just looking to cut energy costs long-term, tankless is worth a real look. It's also common in homes with limited space, since a tankless unit mounts on the wall and frees up the floor space a traditional tank takes up.
We start by sizing the unit correctly for your household – this is the step a lot of installers rush, and it's the difference between a system that actually delivers endless hot water and one that disappoints. We look at how many fixtures might run simultaneously, your groundwater temperature, and flow rate needs. Gas tankless units need proper venting and often a gas line upsize, since they draw more BTUs than a standard water heater. Electric tankless units need a look at your home's electrical capacity, since they pull significant amperage. Once sized right, we mount the unit, run the necessary gas or electrical connections, plumb it in, and test it under real running conditions before we call the job done.
Cost depends on unit size, whether it's gas or electric, and how much of the existing setup needs modification – gas line upsizing, venting work, or electrical panel capacity can all add to the job. Converting from an existing tank setup usually costs more than installing tankless in new construction, since we're adapting existing infrastructure in Chilmark, MA homes rather than building it from scratch.
